Charged with creating a rustic yet sophisticated entry sequence for a country retreat, VBD limited the materials to salvaged timbers, local stone, pebble, and weathering corten steel. Exploring positive and negative space, the steel mesh baskets with pebble allow glimpses of the road beyond while framing views. Free standing steel fins are both curved and lightened with a perfect laser cut circle to capture views of the meadow plantings beyond. Stacked stone walls are planted and follow the meadow’s boundary as a cultural nod to the local agricultural practice of dry stone walls at a field’s edge.
