What makes a garden healing? In truth, any garden can be healing and research proves it to be so. Deeply transformative experiences, however, are facilitated in gardens designed specifically for healthcare settings. Healing gardens, intentionally designed, provide a physical space that supports people who are dealing with disruptions in their lives; the present is confusing and the future uncertain. When a healing garden is designed specifically to attend to this dynamic and exponential shift in life, it becomes a space for potential transformation. We design our gardens using an iterative process that engages people – patients, family members, caregivers, volunteers, staff, donors and management –so that the garden is meaningful to all involved. These transformative spaces are incorporated into a design that respects the individual nature of its environment, providing opportunities for individuals to explore, communities to learn, and all to find comfort.
